Encouraging Enterprise in Local Primary Schools

I was asked to speak with P3, p4 and P5 pupils from Claremont and St John’s Primaries about business enterprise and setting up and running a company. It was quite exciting talking with primary  pupils about what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur – talking about local success stories and what is involved.

The schools are merging, so instead of a committee creating the school uniform and logo, both Schools decided to embark on an interactive participative project to have groups of pupils design the new school logo and colours. The concept was based on a four-week Apprentice style project where pupils from the two schools created eight teams or “companies”. These companies had tasks to complete with a view of presenting their completed logo and uniform creations at a showcase in the local town hall (which happened yesterday).

It was quite inspiring seeing such young children interested in business, enterprise and entrepreneurship. It is entirely possible that some successful business owners of the future were listening to my talk on business enterprise. It did seem quite funny that there were a number of questions around the following topic “what is it like to say ‘you’re fired!’ ” . Maybe there has been a more than a little viewing of The Apprentice! What do you think?
